Cash plans continue to rank top for FCA general insurance value

Healthcare ranked top when it comes to premium pay outs, according to the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) general insurance (GI) value measures data for 2025.

The FCA data showed that last year, healthcare ranked top of product categories, with 68% of premiums paid out in claims, just ahead of pet (63%) and then motor (59%).

Dental and payment protection (mortgage) ranked further behind with 40% and 39%, respectively.

Product categories

In terms of claims frequency, healthcare cash plans continued as the most-used insurance product in the general insurance sector, with a claims frequency of 206.1% in 2025, with a claims acceptance rate of 91.%, an average claims payout of £65 and claims complaints as a percentage of claims of just 0.1%.

When it comes to the other product categories within the health and protection sector, payment protection (mortgages) had a claims frequency in 2025 of 3.8%, with an acceptance rate of 89.0%, an average claims payout of £3,329 and claims complaints as a percentage of claims of 5.6%.

Dental had a claims frequency of 6.0% in 2025, with a claims frequency of 92.7%, an average claims payout of £123 and claims complaints as a percentage of claims of just 0.6%.

 

Health cash plan providers

The vast majority of healthcare cash plan providers had a claims acceptance rate of more than 90% in 2025, with the exceptions of Medicash and Sovereign Healthcare (80%-85% and 85%-90%, respectively).

On claims frequency, Health Shield ranked top with 560%-565%, while AIG had a claims frequency of just 0%-5%

And on claims complaints as a percentage of claims, all providers were at 0%-5%.

AIG posted the highest average claims payout value of between £2,000 and £2,500, while all other providers posted an average of below £500.

 

MPPI

When it comes to mortgage payment protection insurance, on claims acceptance rate, four of the nine providers analysed in this category posted a rate above 90%.

Arch, Canopius, Covea and St Andrews all posted a claims acceptance rate of 90% or below.

All providers who supplied data were at 0%-5% on claims frequency.

In terms of complaints as a percentage of claims, all providers who supplied data were under at 20% or under.

Arch Insurance posted the highest average value claims payout of between £8,000 and £8,500. The lowest average payout was by Amtrust of between £2,000 and £2,500.

Dental insurance

And among dental insurance providers, Axa and Hamilton were the only providers to post a claims acceptance rate of between 95% and 100%.

However, Bupa posted the highest claims frequency of 175%-180%, and Simplyhealth the lowest of between 0%-5%.

All providers in this category also posted claims complaints as a percentage of claims of under 5% and all but one posted an average claims payout of under £500.
