Interim Axa Health CEO Vardy undecided but open to succeeding Garrard

Interim Axa Health CEO Matt Vardy has yet to decide whether to apply to succeed Tracy Garrard permanently but is open to taking on the role.

Vardy, who has been financial director at the insurer since June 2019, succeeded Garrard as interim CEO in April following her decision to step away from the role to pursue a position outside the organisation.

At the launch event for it’s new health plan, Health & Protection asked whether Vardy (pictured) was throwing his hat into the ring to succeed Garrard permanently.

“All of my focus has been on keeping the ship going steady,” Vardy said.

“I am thinking about it as I go but at the moment I haven’t decided what I will do. But one thing I will say is I’m absolutely loving it.

“We’ve got an experienced leadership team with more than 100 years collectively around the table. We all feel really confident that we’re continuing to go in the right direction.”

Vardy has been at the insurer for almost 25 years and noted the recruitment process for Garrard’s successor “is ongoing”.

“And if they ever tapped me on the shoulder and asked would you do this for longer? I’d love the job,” he continued.

“It’s absolutely brilliant and it’s an amazing company to work for, so we’ll see,” he added.
