James Murray has been appointed health secretary.
The MP for Ealing North and replaces Wes Streeting who stepped down from the position yesterday.
Murray had been chief secretary to the Treasury since September 2025, having previously been exchequer secretary from the last General Election in 2024.
He was first elected to Parliament in December 2019 and has largely been involved in financial and Treasury departments, but was a member of the Health and Social Care Committee of MPs in spring 2020.
The announcement comes alongside the unveiling of the government’s Health Bill which will make significant changes to the NHS and how it operates.
Streeting, who is widely tipped to run against Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader after a disastrous set of local council election results last week, tendered his resignation in a letter to prime minister Sir Keir, saying he had lost confidence in his leadership.
