The Personal Finance Society (PFS) has strengthened its expertise by welcoming two new directors and retaining another.
Dr Alan Whittle and Adam Harper have joined the organisation’s leadership team, while Ian Callaghan’s term as a director has been extended for a further year.
Dr Whittle, a chartered financial planner and fellow of the PFS, has served as president, education secretary and careers officer of the Aberdeen Institute of Insurance and Financial Services.
He has also chaired the PFS in north Scotland and been CII national forum officer for Scotland.
Harper is executive director, strategy, advocacy and professional standards in the CII Group. He replaces Gill White, who retired from the board at the end of 2025.
Dr Whittle said that having spent years volunteering across the PFS and wider CII Group, he is excited to continue supporting the profession.
“We are at an important juncture as we look ahead to the challenges and opportunities shaping the future, particularly in areas such as AI, sustainability and educating the next generation of financial planning professionals.
“I’m looking forward to contributing to the board’s strategy, championing high professional standards, and helping to strengthen the trust members and the public place in the work we do.”
Harper added that he is joining the board at such an important moment for the profession. “I look forward to helping shape the PFS’ strategic direction and ensuring our work delivers real value for members and the public.
“From supporting vulnerable customers, to preparing the profession for the great wealth transfer, to strengthening the talent pipeline for the next generation, I’m committed to helping the PFS continue to lead the way in raising professional standards.”
Challenges and opportunities
CII chairwoman Dr Helen Phillips said that the appointments strengthen the expertise of the board “as we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead for the financial planning profession.
“Their insight and commitment will play an important role in supporting members and advancing our shared mission to build and maintain public trust in the profession.”
PFS chairman and president Carla Brown welcomed the new directors. “Their knowledge, passion and insight will help us to meet our existing goals and drive new ambitions.
“I’m looking forward to working with them on behalf of all members for the benefit of our fantastic profession.”
