Queen’s Speech: Government set sights on obesity, mental health and social care

A commitment to tackle obesity and improve mental health featured among an array of measures announced by the Queen in the state opening of Parliament this morning.

Addressing Parliament, the Queen revealed the government plans to bring forward measures to support the health and wellbeing of the nation including to tackle obesity and improve mental health.

Government will also bring forward legislation “to empower the NHS to innovate and embrace technology so patients can receive more tailored and preventative care closer to home”.

There was also a commitment from government to protect the health of the nation by providing additional funding to support the NHS and for proposals on social care reform to be brought forward.

In building on the success of the vaccination programme, government also plans to lead the world in life sciences pioneering new treatments against diseases like cancer and securing jobs and investment across the country.

The monarch also revealed that ministers will oversee the fastest ever increase in public funding for research and development and pass legislation to establish an advanced research agency.
