One of Adrian Gore’s four leadership principles played a key role in the defining moment of his career that led to the genesis of Discovery, the parent company of Vitality.

Gore outlined four principles which challenge outdated mental models and show individuals how to harness their potential in both their personal and professional lives.

These include disciplined optimism, focused urgency, declared goals and the Pareto Tail which builds on the other principles and enables individuals to learn to identify and target a few high-power decisions that can determine their life’s entire trajectory.

At a launch event for his new book The Four Principles, former Conservative MP Rory Stewart asked about a time where Gore experienced the Pareto Tail in his business life.

Gore pointed to a moment in the bath.

“The idea was incentivising health,” Gore revealed. “It came to me in the bath, but it wasn’t my idea alone.”

Paradigm shift

That idea resulted in a paradigm shift from making people healthy to selling health insurance to people who were gym members which ultimately led to the launch of Discovery in 1992 in post-apartheid South Africa.

“We were happy to make this work financially. And we said, you earn points by doing healthy things,” Gore continued.

“It was about data, but it was a moment in the bath.

“From that moment, our business grew and that’s a great story, but what was more interesting was how did I get to that point?

“It was through those principles. We were obsessed with purpose, setting goals.

“When I got into that bath, I was primed to act on that tail, but that was the defining moment.”
