Technology firm Wipro has pledged to reimburse employees in countries hard-hit by Covid-19 such as India and Brazil should their medical treatment costs exceed their insurance coverage.
Wipro is headquartered in Bengalaru, India and employs more than 190,000 employees serving clients in countries across six continents, including across India and Brazil.
In a LinkedIn post, CEO and managing director Thierry Delaporte said that as the latest wave of the pandemic is taking a devastating human toll, especially in India and Brazil, the group has taken “extensive” measures to protect and support colleagues and their families.
This has included extended time off to recover from the disease, support for employees’ family or friends, prioritising mental health and reimbursing employees and family members affected by Covid should their medical treatment costs exceed the insurance coverage.
Delaporte revealed that Wipro has arranged fully-funded Covid isolation centres and that last year, the group turned its tech campus in Pune, India into a five-storey Covid-care hospital to serve anyone in need.
The 450-bed hospital with its 150 oxgenated, 10 ventilated and other ICU beds, and the 15 doctors and 70 nursing staff has continued to treat patients around the clock.
“The pain we feel is deep because of our closeness to these communities, and we are humbled by the strength of and resilience shown by our colleagues,” he added.
