Self-employed dentists in Wales experienced a 7% increase in taxable income in 2019/20, according to data from NHS Digital.

NHS Digital’s Dental Earnings and Expenses Estimates 2019/20 report reveals taxable income for self-employed dentists in Wales increased from from £64,200 in 2018/19 to £68,700 in 2019/20.

While taxable income remained unchanged at £68,600 for self employed dentists in England over the period, taxable income declined 2.1% for self employed dentists in Scotland, from £69,400 in the previous year to £67,900 in 2019/20.

In Northern Ireland, taxable income fell even further for self employed dentists – by 4.2% from £68,000 in 2018/19 to £65,100 in 2019/20.

Earnings and expenses estimates in the report are based on tax data covering both NHS/Health Service and private dentistry.

NHS Digital adds that it is not possible to distinguish between NHS and private earning and expenses and to analyse them separately and dentists with only private earnings and expenses are excluded from the report.
