The protection sector’s great hope for gold at this year’s Paralympics is back out on court training after one of the Team GB wheelchair tennis squad tested positive for Covid.

Mortgage and protection adviser at Hearthstone Mortgages and bronze medallist in Rio and London, Jordanne Whiley (pictured) is competing in the singles and doubles events in wheelchair tennis at this year’s Paralympics for Team GB, which kicked off yesterday.

Earlier today, the British Paralympic Association (BPA) released a statement confirming a Paralympics GB staff member with the wheelchair tennis squad had tested positive for Covid ahead of arrival at the Athlete Village on Monday 23 August, having previously tested negative in Japan on arrival and while at preparation camp.

The positive test result was identified through daily testing. The staff member has started self-isolation immediately as per Tokyo 2020 rules at a government approved isolation facility.

The BPA added it is working with Tokyo 2020 organisers and relevant local authorities to identify close contacts.

However, when contacted by Health & Protection, Hearthstone Mortgages managing director Ajay Nayyar, revealed that Whiley remains poised to begin her campaign on Friday.

“She’s been in Tokyo since Thursday. The positive test was on Monday night. Luckily every other person has tested negative since and so she’s been back on the court today for training.

“The draw took place today for both her doubles and singles campaign. I believe her first match in the singles is on Friday.”
