The UK’s new prime minister has been told to deliver on tax breaks for protection and health insurance.
Earlier this afternoon, Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee, revealed Liz Truss won 57% of valid votes cast in the race to succeed Boris Johnson. The foreign secretary will formally take over from Johnson when she meets the Queen in Balmoral tomorrow.
In a short speech following her win, Truss said she was committed to cutting taxes and growing the UK economy and to “deliver on the National Health Service”.
“I know that we will deliver. We will deliver. We will deliver,” Truss said.
When asked what Truss should deliver for the protection and health sector, Alan Lakey, director at Highclere Financial Services, said the new PM needs to deliver on tax breaks.
“It seems that the NHS is incapable of meeting consumer requirements so the answer – for those that can afford it – is private health insurance, income protection and critical illness,” Lakey told Health & Protection. “Providing tax breaks for this cover would increase the take-up and free up the pressure on the NHS. We do it for pensions so extend the tax relief to private health provision,” he added.
