Four in 10 employers think employees having a better understanding of their own risks of serious illnesses like cancer has increased in importance to them.

This is according to research of 500 decision makers carried out by Towergate Health & Protection this month to coincide with World Cancer Day on 4 February.

The research showed that 42% of employers said that employees having a better understanding of their own risks of serious illnesses such as cancer, was more of a priority for them.

In addition, a third (32%) of employers said that being able to easily access screening for cancer had increased in importance for employees as NHS wait times for treatment remain at record levels.

It added that scientists in a World Cancer Research Fund UK report indicated around 40% of cancers could be prevented by early screening.

Debra Clark, head of specialist consulting at Towergate Health & Protection said: “With survival rates high in cases of early diagnosis, providing risk profiling and screening for employees is likely to have a major impact on health and wellbeing across the workplace.

“Employers prompted by World Cancer Day 2023 to offer simple screening or risk profiling services could literally have saved lives by the next World Cancer Day.”
