Aviva backs calls for PMI tax breaks in Budget

Aviva is the latest insurer to add its voice to the chorus of calls on government for tax breaks for private medical insurance (PMI) and other health and wellbeing services, ahead of this week’s Budget.

In particular, the insurer argued that a cut in Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) would be most beneficial in encouraging uptake of health cover and supporting a healthier population.

Last week the Association of British Insurers (ABI) joined the Confederation of British Industry, Axa Health, BIBA and Bupa Insurance to issue a plea for such tax breaks.

Steve Bridger, managing director for health at Aviva, told Health & Protection that as a core member of the ABI the insurer agreed with the body’s position.

“The IPT cut would be positive in helping more employers look after employee health,” Bridger said.

“But it would in turn keep more people in work.

“This also links to government efforts to tackle economic inactivity and the impact of those leaving the workplace while alleviating that burden on the NHS. So we’re absolutely supportive of that.”
