Wes Streeting has been appointed health secretary in a series of Cabinet appointments made be the country’s new prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Following Labour’s general election win this morning, Starmer turned to Streeting to succeed Conservative Victoria Atkins.
Streeting (pictured) was first elected in May 2015 and has held the posts of shadow exchequer secretary to the Treasury, shadow minister for schools, shadow secretary of state for child poverty and most recently shadow secretary of state for health and social care.
Starmer also made Rachel Reeves chancellor of the exchequer succeeding Conservative Jeremy Hunt.
The first woman to hold the role, Reeves was first elected in 2010.
She is a former chairwoman of the business, energy and industrial strategy select committee and has held a number of roles in opposition including shadow pensions minister, chief secretary to the Treasury, shadow work and pensions minister, shadow cabinet office minister and shadow Duchy of Lancaster.
