China’s National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) has launched a tip-off service through its official WeChat account, which allows social organisations and the public to report leads on medical insurance fraud.

The NHSA said eligible informants will be rewarded with a one-time payment ranging from 200 yuan (about £20.90) to as much as 200,000 yuan (£20,900).

WeChat is a Chinese app that combines messaging and social networking similar to WhatsApp.

The NHSA noted that the misuse of medical insurance funds undermines public interests, and it urged the society-at-large to make efforts to combat fraud.

In 2024, China’s medical insurance watchdogs recovered 27.5bn yuan (£2.9bn) of misused medical insurance funds, with a total of 10,741 people arrested.

The Chinese government has vowed to continue to strengthen its oversight of medical insurance funds to ensure minimum fraud.
