The weekly cost of residential long-term care in Islington, North London, is £1,488 – and £621 in Blaenau Gwent, Wales.

The figures have emerged as part of Legal & General research which shows that care costs at a local level across the UK vary by more than £800 a week – or £41,600 a year.

Windsor & Maidenhead and Elmbridge, Surrey sit alongside Islington in the costliest places to pay for long-term care.

Stoke-on-Trent, Blackpool and Merthyr Tydfil are some of the least expensive locations for residential care.

Legal & General Retail Retirement said its figures show that, on average, there is a £229 difference between the cost of weekly residential care and council paid fees.

In London, after Islington, Westminster (£1,483) comes out as second most costly, followed by Hammersmith & Fulham (£1,468).

Even in many of the least expensive locations for residential care in Britain there is a disparity between the cost of private care and the local council paid fee. On average, there is a £229 difference in this figure across the country.
The biggest difference is in Hammersmith & Fulham, London, at £814 and the smallest difference can be found in Bristol, where there is just a £20 disparity.

L&G’s spokesperson said that this is “particularly relevant” as research from the Institute of Fiscal Studies found that the amount of money spent per person on long-term care by the state has fallen by 31% over the last decade, with cuts varying considerably geographically.

The insurance giant’s analysis came as it launched Care Concierge, which it says could be a “first of a kind” service to help individuals and their families to understand their funding options and find appropriate and affordable later life care.
