Advice firm Velvet Mortgage and Insure Services is going into schools and universities to educate young people about finances and careers in the sector.

Joanna Streames, the firm’s managing director, discussed how her company was going into schools to talk to young people about finances.

Providing further information to Health & Protection about the work, Streames (pictured) said her firm is speaking to groups of students of various ages in a simple way about the kinds of perceptions they may have about finances.

She provides basic information depending on their age through stories and examples, such as explaining what a mortgage is and how it works to children..

Streames added the firm is also aiming to encourage younger people, and not just boys, to consider a career in finance.

“I believe we need to go back to basics and teach this stuff,” Streames added.

“We need to do more to get more diversity into our industry because I believe, this will in turn, lead to a more diverse section of society ultimately having the conversations they need and breaking down barriers that people feel.”

As part of Income Protection Awareness Week earlier this month, Streams talked about the importance of renters taking out income protection and how their situation required a different approach compared to home owners.
