Aviva has appointed Matt McGill as managing director for health, taking over from Steve Bridger who held the role for five years.

Bridger (pictured) has been appointed chief claims officer for UK and Ireland general insurance with immediate effect, replacing Waseem Malik who has left Aviva.

Bridger has been present in the UK health and protection industry for 30 years, with 22 years in Aviva including a number of senior roles across the health and group risk business.

Prior to taking on the health role, he was managing director for group protection for five years having been head of group risk for five years previously.

He has also been head of customer operations and transformation for Aviva UK Health and was senior group risk manager for Norwich Union Healthcare.

Before joining Aviva, then Norwich Union, he worked at Unum as a customer relations manager and at Zurich as a service manager for group risk.

McGill has been at Aviva for almost 28 years and also has non-executive director roles with Sesame Bankhall Group and Criterion.

He had been CEO of the equity release business for three-and-a-half years.

Prior to that he was director of Aviva Investment Solutions for five years and was director of product and investment propositions for Aviva Workplace Savings and Retirement for a decade.

McGill was also interim managing director for the workplace savings and retirement business from December 2020 to November 2021.

His other experience includes senior roles in IT.

Both appointments are subject to regulatory approval.
