Baroness Nicky Morgan is seeking to launch an inquiry on women’s financial resilience in the House of Lords.
Speaking at the Women in Protection conference, Baroness Morgan (pictured) told delegates the inquiry would aim to be one of the four ad-hoc inquiries launched this year and would start in the summer, continuing into next year.
“One of the best things that works in Parliament are the select committees – both in the House of Commons, I mention the Treasury Select Committee, and the House of Lords,” she said.
“The ones in the Commons tend to shadow departments and will quiz ministers, but also key stakeholders, launch inquiries and everything else, and they work cross party.
“The House of Lords is the same, but tend to be more on issues and the House of Lords sets up four ad-hoc inquiries every year.
“A couple of years ago I chaired one on fraud, online fraud and the growth and the challenge of all of that.
“So I would very much like to put forward, and am working a way to put forward towards having a specific inquiry on Women’s Financial Resilience.”
Baroness Morgan added that if agreed it would likely start in the summer and or autumn and be around nine months to complete.
She also asked for input on what it should be considering and examining.
“I’m open to ideas. What should we be looking at? What can we most shine a light on?” she concluded.
