Bupa is rolling out its weight management plan including access to weight loss medication to health insurance customers.

The plan provides clinical and lifestyle support, including GP consultations, tailored health programmes and lifestyle coaching along with medication such as Wegovy and Mounjaro where clinically appropriate.

Members must be over 18 and have either a BMI over 30, or a BMI over 27 and a weight-related condition to be eligible for the plan.

However, those with diabetes cannot use the service.

The move follows the launch of the plan to Bupa Health Clinics self-pay customers in 2023, where initial GP appointments cost £99, with each set of four weekly doses of either Wegovy or Mounjaro ranging from £169 to £360.

Delivered through Bupa Health Clinics, the service also includes 24/7 access to a nurse and a GP review at six months.

The initial GP consultation, which assesses a customer’s suitability for the weight management plan, typically costs £99 and will be waived for eligible Bupa Consumer and SME health insurance customers.

During this appointment, the GP will assess the customer’s BMI and any weight-related health conditions to determine if they are clinically appropriate for the weight loss journey.

If suitable, these customers receive 10% off the monthly cost of their weight management plan including the support from Bupa Health Clinics.

Corporate customers will be able to add the benefit to their employee health insurance schemes to fully cover access to weight management services and the cost of medications from January 2026 policy renewals.

Dr Robin Clark, medical director for Bupa Insurance, said: “Obesity is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today.

“By offering access to expert clinical care, treatment and coaching, we’re helping people take control of their health and reduce their risk of serious conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

“We know that sustainable weight loss requires more than just willpower, it takes the right support, tools and clinical guidance.

“That’s why our approach combines trusted medical expertise, personalised coaching and weight loss medication where appropriate. Together, these elements empower people to make lasting improvements to their health and achieve the best possible results.”
