Chris Carroll is to succeed Carlos Jaureguizar as chief executive officer for Bupa Global, India and UK at the start of next year when Jaureguizar moves to the role of chief executive officer for the insurer’s Europe and Latin America (ELA) division.

Jaureguizar succeeds Iñaki Peralta, CEO, Europe and Latin America who is leaving the business on 1 January 2026 to pursue new professional projects.

Peralta has spent 28 years within the Sanitas and Bupa organisation. He did not give any details of his next step but thanked all the colleagues, suppliers and partners he had worked with.

Carroll (pictured) who moved to the UK in January 2025 from Australia to take up the role of CEO of Bupa Insurance, will be succeeded by Richard Washington, who is being promoted from medical and healthcare director at Bupa Insurance.

Carroll will report to Iñaki Ereño, CEO for Bupa Group, to lead the continued growth of Bupa’s portfolio of insurance and provision businesses in the UK.

The appointments are subject to regulatory approval.

Carroll spoke exclusively to Health & Protection earlier this year outlining the major issues he saw in the UK private medical insurance (PMI) sector including the unsustainability of pricing and being open to overhauling commission.

He takes up this role having moved to the UK in January 2025 to lead Bupa Insurance, from the insurer’s health insurance business in Australia where he was managing director from March 2022.

Before this he was director for domestic retail portfolio, Bupa Australia’s clinics business, having joined Bupa in November 2020.

Before Bupa, Carroll was CEO for WS Audiology – Asia Pacific, where he led the transformation agenda for Medibank, a major health insurer in Australia.

Carroll said: “I am delighted to step into the leadership of Bupa Global, India & UK at this pivotal time.

“We are on an exciting journey of collaboration across health systems and improving our customers’ health outcomes.

“I am excited to continue our momentum, to reach more people with high-quality, trusted care.”

In his new role, Richard Washington will report to Carroll to lead the continued growth of Bupa Insurance’s consumer and business insurance segments in the UK.

An experienced leader in financial services, Washington joined Bupa in 2018 as product and proposition director for its UK Insurance arm, becoming general manager for the consumer division in 2021 and leading the business for an interim period in 2024.

Previous to Bupa, he held senior roles at Lloyds Banking Group and NatWest.

Having held the role of CEO for Bupa Global, India and UK since 2021, Carlos Jaureguizar will move to chief executive officer for Bupa’s Europe and Latin America (ELA) market unit from 1 January 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

He will continue to report to Iñaki Ereño, CEO for Bupa Group.

Prior to moving to the UK, Jaureguizar was general manager for Bupa Chile from 2018, and previous to this was chief financial officer for Bupa’s Europe and Latin America market unit from 2014.

He joined Bupa as strategy director for Sanitas, Bupa’s business in Spain, in 2006.

Iñaki Ereño, CEO for Bupa Group, said: “At Bupa, we have world-class leaders with unrivalled experience across global markets to drive performance, health innovation and customer growth.

“These appointments are a testament to the unmatched strength and talent in our leadership teams across Bupa to drive customer centricity and innovative healthcare.

“Across all our Bupa markets, we are committed to embedding our transformation agenda, delivering the highest standards of care and fulfilling our purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives and making a better world.”
