Consumer Duty increasing protection conversations for mortgage advisers – AMI

The Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI) is campaigning for mortgage documentation to include nudges about protection insurance.

Positive nudges have a key role in ensuring consumers see a future need for protection insurance, according to Stacy Penn, senior policy adviser at the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI) (pictured).

Penn was speaking at Protection Review 2025 about the findings from the trade body’s latest Protection Viewpoint research showing consumers do not typically see a future need for protection.

Role of positive nudges

Penn emphasised she and the trade body saw a role for positive nudges to taking out protection insurance.

“Something AMI is calling for in its mortgage discussion work is the ESIS [European Standardisation Information Sheet] document that you get with your mortgage, that already covers building insurance,” Penn continued.

“We have said there should be something in there around, ‘have you thought about other insurances like protection’ to help people see that link.”

Penn told delegates there was a huge opportunity for advice in helping consumers see that future need – particularly the younger generation.

“We know that the younger generation are more curious, more engaged with protection,” she continued.

“Generally people find it hard to think ahead to the future. We see that with things like saving for retirement, it’s the reason why pensions auto-enrolment came in.”

Penn maintained that the sector needs to keep doing what it’s doing and nailing down those foundations.

“It’s ensuring we’re considering how we integrate protection conversations alongside mortgages, how we’re ensuring those conversations are memorable and resonate,” she added.
