Health Summit: AI application presents huge opportunity for healthcare – Sunthares

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) presents a huge opportunity for healthcare technology.

Addressing delegates at the second Health & Protection annual Health Summit at Tylney Hall in Hampshire this afternoon, Nishan Sunthares, managing director of diagnostics at the Association of British Health Tech Industries, told delegates that 30 November 2022 was a key date for AI and consequently healthcare technology.

“On 30 November 2022, Open AI released Chat GPT and suddenly everyone understood the opportunities around AI.”

“That uses a technology called a large language model but some of those models exist for assessing images,” Sunthares continued.

“The application in AI and subsets of healthcare is probably the biggest use in cases of AI in the near term – in imaging, in the way in which we analyse molecule and drug discovery, in the way in which we analyse data to understand your genetic make-up and your predilection towards disease.”

Sunthares further called on delegates to join a UK research programme called Future Health seeking three million volunteers who are prepared to give their genome sequences for research.

“Some of the ways healthcare is going to move forward is not going to be about intervention and diagnosis which historically has been a strong focus,” he added.

“It’s going to be about prevention as well and understanding your risk factor towards disease, which from an actuarial perspective can then be translated to an insurance product. If you can determine the risk for heart disease you can price something for it.

“But it’s also going to have bigger societal impacts in terms of our utlisation of health services and quality of life and the way we go about our daily lives as well.”
