Watch now: the Health Horizons virtual event on hidden addictions with the impacts in plain sight
Bupa’s latest Health Horizons session brought together leading experts to unpack our new research which surveyed 1,503 employees and 1,500 employers.
The research reveals a growing concern among employers and employees about the impacts of addiction in the workplace.
It highlights 71% of employers say they are concerned about addiction-related issues among their workforces.
Meanwhile, 34% of employees report having used or witnessed substance use or addictive behaviours during work hours.
The research also explored how modern workplace stressors, from burnout to blurred work-life boundaries, are driving more employees toward unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Almost half of employees surveyed (48%) said they had turned to addictive behaviours to cope with stress at work and for 40%, the workplace culture itself played a role in fuelling addictive behaviours.
Whether it’s alcohol, prescription medication, or digital dependencies, these hidden struggles were having very visible consequences on productivity, engagement, and overall wellbeing.
One of the biggest barriers for many seeking help is stigma, with 51% of employees reporting it prevented them from seeking help at work.
Our panel discussed how breaking the silence around addiction must be a core component of any forward-thinking mental health strategy.
When employees feel safe to speak up and seek help – without fear of judgment – businesses can foster a culture of trust, resilience, and recovery.
Key takeaways for HR and business leaders:
- Addiction is more prevalent than you think – and it could be affecting your people.
- Proactive support and education can reduce stigma and encourage early intervention.
- Integrating addiction awareness into your wellbeing strategy is essential for a healthy workforce.
The conversation does not end here. Re-watch the event and join us in creating healthier, more supportive workplaces – where no one has to struggle in silence.
