Esme Pearson, employee benefits consultant at Hooray Health & Protection, speaks to Health & Protection about how Covid delayed her move into the corporate sector, the importance of having a boss that believes in you and why Stacey Dooley is her hero.
How did you get your start in the sector?
After years in the hospitality sector I decided I wanted to utilise my degree and explore the financial services sector. I got my first job in an office setting which led to me joining Hooray Health & Protection six months later in a junior position.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
As a sociable and interactive person, I enjoy interacting with a wide variety of individuals from all different industries.
Who is your role model – in life or in work?
Stacey Dooley – a presenter and journalist who travels the world to raise awareness around unspoken topics.
Who has been your most important mentor in your career so far and why?
My boss Charlie, who always pushes me and believes in me.
What advice would you give to people thinking about a career in the sector?
Take the plunge regardless of certain reservations. I joined a small two-year-old company and it was the best decision I could have made.
What has been your biggest setback and how did you overcome it?
Timing – I graduated in 2020 when Covid hit which set me up for a rocky start to the working world.
Laugh or cry – what did your most memorable client or case make you want to do and why?
Cry – Clients who go off the radar for months then request things ASAP.
What’s your ultimate goal for your career?
To remain working for a company which respects my work/life balance while helping me continuously improve.

What’s your biggest talent away from work?
This is a work in progress.
