Going the extra mile for a young mother who had disclosed that she attempted suicide in the past helped her secure income protection cover.

This is according to Nicola Huxley, director at Sphere Financial Services (pictured), who was speaking on the final day of Income Protection Action Week.

Checking in with her GP

“I had a girl,” Huxley explained. “She’d just had a baby. She was in her mid 20s.

“And unfortunately, in her teenage years she attempted suicide.

“And she’d had a baby and been concerned about her mental health, so had taken a proactive positive step to check-in with a GP.”

Penalised for disclosure

Though Huxley added that this had meant she had disclosed a mental health condition meaning an automated system was just giving her a no.

“I was with this girl and just felt for her, so I had to take extra steps to talk to people and get her to talk to a doctor and we had to talk about how it was represented on her medical report and everything else,” Huxley continued.

“But I’m glad to say she does now have cover through me going the extra mile and going with her on that journey which was something a few years ago I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do.”
