MetLife pays £34m in individual protection claims

MetLife UK paid more than £34,189,519 to individual protection customers in 2025 – approving and paying 31,553 claims across its accident and illness policies, up 16% from claims paid in 2024.

In total, 94% of accident and health claims were paid. MetLife said it paid 90% of accepted claims in five working days.

More than 18,000 (18,019) hospitalisation claims were paid, as well as 11,104 broken bone claims. The insurer also approved 6,992 claims for children, accounting for 22% of claims paid in 2025.

Adrian Matthews, deputy CEO of MetLife UK (pictured), said: “When someone faces illness or an unexpected accident, knowing they have meaningful financial protection in place can ease the burden.

“Our role is to reduce financial pressure, so they can focus on recovery. That’s why we work hard to ensure claims are handled with care and paid as quickly as possible.

“The rise in claims throughout 2025 reinforces a clear message from our Everyday Risk Report: everyday risks can strike anytime, anywhere, and affect anyone.

“In those moments, we’re proud to stand by our customers and support them when they need it most.“

He added: “Paying out those 31,000 claims would not have been possible without our protection advisers ensuring customers had the appropriate coverage in place.”
