Thousands of people returned to gyms across the country in a bid to boost their physical and mental health after months in lockdown.

Last week Health & Protection reported on the initiatives providers were introducing as they reopened their doors for the first time this year. This included Nuffield Health and PureGym.

While Nuffield Health could not provide actual figures for its first week after lockdown at the end of last week, a company spokesperson told Health & Protection anecdotally, the provider had seen a “good number” of returning members and new joiners.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for PureGym told Health & Protection at the end of last week that prior to the reopening of their centres, there were plenty of indicators of the strong underlying demand for people to return to the gym and the first week had proven exactly that.

“We saw queues outside our clubs in the early hours on reopening day, feedback from members has been overwhelmingly positive and importantly our team members are delighted to be back at work doing what they love.

“We are well on track to reach our target of 1m visits to our gyms across England in the first week alone, which demonstrates how essential gyms are for our society. We have been delighted to welcome back returning members and have also seen tens of thousands of new joiners this week as the nation takes the opportunity to look after their health and wellbeing.”
