Spire Healthcare has bought Physiolistic, a physiotherapy business operating multiple clinics in the Thames Valley area, for an initial £5.2m.
The firm provides physiotheraphy services to all major insurance providers, including Axa Health, Bupa, Vitality and WPA.
Founded in 2007 and employing 30 colleagues including 20 physiotherapists, it operates three clinics in Henley, Reading and Windsor and is the first acquisition of a physiotherapy business by the healthcare provider.
In 2024, it carried out approximately 43,000 appointments and reported patient retention rates with 85% of new patients re-booking for at least one follow-up appointment.
Spire said the acquisition complemented its existing business and aligned well with its strategy of expanding selectively in new verticals to attract customers and meet more of patients’ healthcare needs.
It added business growth opportunities created by the acquisition included delivering an integrated patient journey by driving diagnostic and orthopaedic surgery referrals from the clinic to local hospitals.
It is likely to integrate Physiolistic capturing referrals from the hospital group’s primary care regional corporate musculoskeletal occupational health services and may target future new clinic openings.
The deal was confirmed on the same day that Spire Healthcare announced a 50% drop in profits for the first half of 2025.
Justin Ash, chief executive of Spire Healthcare, said the acquisition complemented the existing business and supported the strategy of selectively expanding its primary care offering and would enable it to meet more of people’s physical health needs.
“Physiolistic’s physiotherapy services fit well with the existing hospital business and our fast-growing occupational health business, while providing a good springboard for future growth,” he said.
Clint Botha, business director of Physiolistic, added the firm was positioned to expand its services to new locations across the UK.
“Having already worked in close partnership with Spire Healthcare through the provision of physiotherapy services, this integration is a natural progression that solidifies our shared commitment to delivering outstanding patient care,” he said.
