Dr Thérèse Coffey has been appointed secretary of state for health and social care.
Coffey (pictured) succeeds Steve Barclay, who has only held the post since July when he took over from Sajid Javid.
It was Javid’s resignation along with that of then chancellor Rishi Sunak which started the chain of events which led to the downfall of prime minister Boris Johnson, who was succeeded by former foreign secretary Liz Truss yesterday.
Truss has taken little time to assemble her new cabinet. Her appointments include Coffey, who moves from work and pensions to health and social care and Kwasi Kwarteng, previously secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, who is the new chancellor of the exchequer. He succeeds Nadim Zahawi.
Coffey has also been appointed deputy prime minister.
