UnitedHealth Group has expressed the company’s deep sadness and shock following the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Reports from the US reveal Thompson (pictured) was shot dead yesterday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown on Wednesday morning while walking towards the company’s annual investor conference.

Thompson was promoted to CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the health benefits business of UnitedHealth Group in April 2021.

He joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004, and prior to his appointment as CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he was CEO of its government programs including the Medicare and retirement and community and state businesses.

In a statement UnitedHealth Group said: “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

“Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him.

“We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.

“Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
