Aviva medical director Dr Doug Wright is retiring this summer after 27 years in the UK health insurance sector.
He joined Aviva in the summer of 1998 and was appointed medical director in September 2009.
The insurer told Health & Protection that Dr Subashini M had been working alongside Dr Wright as part of succession planning for his departure.
Wright will be pursuing his hobbies, including golf, DIY and sailing around the world.
Announcing his departure on LinkedIn, Wright (pictured) revealed he would be retiring at the end of August.
“It’s been an honour to work alongside so many talented, passionate, and dedicated people throughout my career,” Wright said.
“From the early days to my current role as medical director, I’ve witnessed remarkable changes in our industry and had the privilege of contributing to work that truly matters—supporting people’s health and wellbeing.”
New adventures
He added he was “deeply grateful” to his colleagues, mentors, and partners who have made his journey so rewarding.
“Your support, collaboration, and friendship have meant the world to me,” Wright continued.
“As I step into retirement, I’m looking forward to new adventures, more time with family, and some nautical based experiences.
“I’ll continue cheering on the industry from the side lines and staying connected with the wonderful network I’ve built over the years.”
Smooth transition
Commenting on Wright’s departure, in a statement sent to Health & Protection, Aviva revealed he would be leaving the business after 27 years to pursue his hobbies.
It added Wright had worked closely with Dr Suba M to ensure a smooth transition as she was promoted to medical and sustainability director of the health business in January 2025 as part of succession plans for his retirement.
Matt McGill, managing director of health at Aviva, said: “Throughout his career at Aviva, Doug has made a lasting impact.
“His leadership has been instrumental in strengthening our internal clinical capabilities and shaping our message to the market – helping to position us for the growth we continue to build on today. His contributions have left a legacy we’re proud to carry forward.
“We thank Doug for everything he’s done and wish him all the very best for a happy and fulfilling retirement.”
