Aviva is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) underwriting summarisation tool to support individual income protection applications, completing the rollout of its AI technology across its individual protection product range.

The rollout means most individual protection applications where a medical report is required can now be summarised, spanning life insurance, critical illness and income protection cover.

The tool launched for individual life insurance applications in November 2025, with technology adapted for critical illness applications in March 2026.

The insurer said its AI underwriting capability focuses on the front end of the journey, supporting underwriters to make decisions more quickly from the point of application.

Reducing underwriting times

It said the tool uses generative AI to analyse medical reports, transforming lengthy and complex documents into summaries containing the key information underwriters need to review.

The insurer revealed this has reduced the time underwriters spend reviewing each case by around half, while it added testing had demonstrated high levels of accuracy (99.7%), enabling underwriters to assess applications more efficiently while maintaining robust decision-making.

Robert Morrison, chief underwriting officer at Aviva, said: “We’ve already seen the positive impact this technology can have for life insurance and critical illness applications, helping our underwriters review medical evidence more efficiently and improving the experience for advisers and customers.

“By extending AI summarisation to income protection, we’re continuing our commitment to making protection insurance faster, simpler and more accessible, while ensuring more customers can get the cover they need as quickly as possible.”
