A British mother is facing a £75,000 hospital bill after prematurely giving birth in the US.

Reports in the UK say that Amy Collins, 30, needed an emergency caesarean to deliver her 1lb 90z son William in Texas earlier this month.

The procedure took place two days before she was due to fly home.

William was born at 24 weeks and needed specialist care in hospital where he remains.

Amy, of Bartley Green, Birmingham, had no insurance she has been hit with the massive bill – which could get even bigger.

William’s grandother, Sarah Covey, 48, of Bartley Green, told BirminghamLive: “I am scared to death.

“My grandson William is an amazing fighter and doing so well but they have built up a medical bill of over $100,000 because it’s America and not our NHS.

“I am absolutely scared to death for them.

“William will be in hospital for months and the medical bill could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“Amy has had to set up a payment plan but I am not sure how she is going to afford to pay it. It is just a nightmare.”

She has been living off and on in the US after she met Greg online three years ago.
