Andy Burnham appeared to give his backing to the Milburn Review by using his first speech as prime minister to promise more mental health support for young people.
Outside Downing Street earlier today, while committing to a new 10-year plan for the UK later this year, and help with the cost of living, details of which will be set out tomorrow (Tuesday), Burnham also said: “We will help more young people into work by changing the education system and giving them more support, more mental health support.”
At the end of last month, the review’s principal adviser Matt Upton told delegates at the launch of Zurich’s Value of Mental Health report that Alan Milburn’s action plan on youth labour market inactivity would be published in September and had the backing of Sir Keir Starmer’s likely successor.
This is the second time in less than a week that Burnham has talked about his desire to support the UK’s healthcare system. On Friday, after being crowned leader of the Labour Party, he used his first speech to name social care as an area he would like to fix.
