Almost half of perimenopausal women (47%) have had their ability to work affected by their symptoms, Aviva has found.

Moreover, around a third (37%) are concerned that the condition could lead them to quit work earlier than planned.

This is according to Aviva’s latest Menopause report, which spoke to 2,000 women across various stages of the condition.

The research also found that one in 10 perimenopausal women and almost one in six (17%) who are post-menopausal have changed roles or jobs because of the condition.

Mental health is also a factor for the almost 9 million women working in the UK during menopause, with 73% reporting an impact on their mental state.

Not mandatory

The report found that three-quarters of sufferers (75%) are more likely to trust an employer that supports them and would welcome additional menopause support in their workplace.

Across all stages of menopause, 64% of women believe employers have a positive role to play in educating employees about the condition.

It is not mandatory for companies to support those experiencing menopause although the Employment Rights Act 2025 encourages those employing more than 250 people to offer structured support.

Respondents to Aviva’s survey would like their employer to provide flexible working, access to medical advice or support, health and wellbeing resources and set clear menopause policies.

Personal power

The findings also suggest that preparation and support can make a difference. Almost two-thirds of women said they felt unprepared for perimenopause.

However, many reported feeling more positive once they understood what was happening and had access to information, guidance and support.

Indeed, with the right workplace culture and support, menopause can be a positive for many women.

Around a third (30%) of perimenopausal women said menopause unlocked “a new sense of personal power”.

Aviva UK Health medical director Dr Subashini M (pictured) said the research shows that menopause is not solely defined by challenge or difficulties.

“Many women describe greater confidence, resilience and a stronger sense of self during this stage of life.

“Employers can help make a difference by creating workplace cultures where women feel supported, included and able to talk openly about their experiences.”

She added: “Supporting employees through menopause is not only beneficial for individual wellbeing, but can also help employers build trust, strengthen inclusion and create workplace cultures where women feel valued and able to thrive.”
