Missing out on five-minute mile goal changed me forever – Gore

Narrowly missing out on his declared goal of running the five-minute mile changed Vitality parent Discovery founder Adrian Gore forever.

At a launch event for his new book The Four Principles last week, Gore outlined four principles which challenge outdated mental models and show individuals how to harness their potential in both their personal and professional lives.

These include disciplined optimism, focused urgency, the Pareto Tail and declared goals.

Strive For Five

Touching on the importance of setting a declared goal, Gore told former home secretary and Conservative MP Amber Rudd about an example from three years ago when he took to LinkedIn to declare he was going to run the five-minute mile in his bid to strive for five.

“I was trying to run the five minute mile,” Gore said.

“To declare a goal, you put it on Linkedin. I had the best training and the best coaches.

“But the truth is I didn’t do it. I got really close, but the truth is I didn’t have the ability.

“But I tell you it changed me forever.”

Gore added that the principle of setting a declared goal was “fundamental” to getting to the Pareto Tail which builds on the other principles and enables individuals to learn to identify and target a few high-power decisions that can determine their life’s entire trajectory.
